Wow! What a weekend! The 2003 Poultry Science Weekend was a huge success. We had 260 people for the weekend's events. It was a good group of former students, current students, faculty, staff, and industry friends. It really did feel like a family reunion with all the memorabilia, club scrapbooks, and REALLY old photos. We were also honored to have the Texas A&M Vice Chancellor of Agriculture join us for the Steak Fry. Please enjoy browsing through the photo album from the Steak Fry and the Tailgate Picnic.
One of the highlights of The Weekend was celebrating the 50th anniversary of Dr. Krueger joining the faculty. His 50 years of teaching were recognized by a cake and presenting him with an Aggie watch engraved with "50 years 1953-2003". There was also a display of photos from when a young Dr. Krueger was just starting out on the faculty.
Following the Steak Fry, one of The Weekend's unplanned events was a get-together at Northgate. So many people showed up that we will have to include this afterparty in next year's official schedule. Despite being "rained in" on saturday morning for the picnic, we still had fun eating bar-b-que before the game in the Kleberg atrium. It made many of the former students feel like they were returning home and made many of the current students and faculty feel like they had to go to class. One thing that will have to change for next year is being outscored by the opponent in the football game.
We were fortunate to have the financial support of many friends, without whom The Weekend's event would not have been possible. We appreciate the donations from the following individuals and companies:
Cargill - Waco Crescent Pointe Ltd. / Elaina and Emanuel Glockzin '72 Bunny Curry '91 Feather Crest Farms Hy-Line International Ideal Poultry Breeding Farms K-Klean West Agro Maxim Production Company Bob and Margaret Palm '65 Dan and Venetia Shafer '82 Jim and Olivia Taylor '55 Tyson - Carthage The Weekend was also due to the hard work of the volunteer organizing committee of Casey Owens, Caulder Bookout, and Renee Woelfel. Also, JoAnn Pilkey, Dale Hyatt, and the Windham family did much of the local logistics and we appreciate their hard work too.
Please let us know what you thought of The Weekend and how we can make it better. It is an event for everyone... past, present, and future. We hope to see you here next year. Gig 'Em !!!Spring Fling Picnic And Softball Game - April 26, 2003
About 40 people turned out for the annual Spring Fling on Saturday, April 26. It was a beautiful afternoon for a picnic and Bonham Park was a great setting for the event. Everyone made use of the basketball court, soccer field, playground, and sunny relaxation before a great lunch by Satchel's. After lunch, the students squared off against the faculty and staff in the annual softball challenge. Our newest faculty member, Dr. Reddy who was originally from India, found out how similar (or different) softball is to cricket. Dr. Zhu, the faculty's ace pitcher earned the title "Ironman Zhu" after taking a line drive in the stomach and continuing to pitch. Jason Lee also helped the faculty/staff team by playing on the student team. In the end, the faculty+staff team won the game for the first time by a score of 16-9. The trophy is now on display in the Department office and there is an empty space in the student lounge. The day was really just a good time to get together, socialize, and have fun. Please enjoy the pictures. Thanks to Dr. Birkhold for planning the event and we hope to see everyone next year.Texas A&M Poultry Science Co-Sponsors Latin American Conference - February 7, 2003
The Texas A&M University Poultry Science Department co-sponsored the 5th International Symposium on Poultry Processing and Product Quality on February 7th, 2003 in Leon, Mexico. Dr. Alan Sams coordinated the event for A&M and Dr. Sarah Birkhold was also on the program. Other aggies on the program were Dr. Casey Owens (University of Arkansas), Dr. Christine Alvarado (Texas Tech University), and Dr. Pilar Castañeda (The National Autonomous University of Mexico). The primary sponsor of the meeting was the Mexican National Association of Poultry Science Specialists (ANECA) and The National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) was an additional co-sponsor.Great Turnout for HLSR 2003 Wingbanding - January 28, 2003
A&M Expands Poultry Health Research Facilities
The wingbanding event for the HLSR 2003 was held on Tuesday, January 28, and was a great success. We had a record turnout of both HLSR Breeder Greeters and TAMU students to help wingband approximately 36,000 chicks. This and other wingbanding events are a major source of income used to fund undergraduate and graduate scholarships and fellowships. Thanks to all who made this years event a great success. (1/31/03)
The Poultry Science and Veterinary Pathobiology Departments are pleased to announce the completion of their new biological safety level 2 (BL-2) isolation research building. This building has seven self-contained isolation rooms with ventilation, filtration, temperature, and lighting controls to allow low pathogenic agents to be studied in compliance with animal care and safety guidelines. The building also has a sample/reagent preparation area. Texas A&M is grateful for the donations of equipment and expertise from General Shelters and Multifan without which the project would not have been possible. This new facility is part of a general expansion of the poultry health program at Texas A&M with the recent addition of three new faculty positions and continued facilities renovation. (1/14/03)
Aggies Host Social at Poultry Science Association Meeting - August 13, 2002
Starting a new tradition, the Department hosted an Aggie "Breakfast" at the Poultry Science Association meeting August 13th at the University of Delaware. About 50 Aggies, past and present, attended the event which was held in the afternoon since Aggies cannot tell time and get their meals mixed up. There were snacks, drinks, and door prizes but most of all just good fun and conversation. Please join us next year in Wisconsin.2002 Steak Fry - September 20, 2002
About 160 people attended our annual fall steak fry on September 20 to kick off the new school year and prepare for the Virginia Tech game the next day. This was a great chance for students, staff, faculty, former students, and industry friends to mix and socialize. We also celebrated Dr. Krueger's birthday. We are grateful to Hy-Line for their sponsorship of the event.Steak Fry - September 21, 2001
The annual Steak Fry was held on September 21, 2001 at Central Park. Once again, Dale, Robert and Dr. Bailey did an excellent job with the steaks. The weather was great and we had a good turnout. We also had a birthday cake for Dr. Krueger, even though his birthday is in October. It wouldn't seem like a Steak Fry without singing Happy Birthday to Doc.Spring Fling Picnic - April 21, 2001
The first annual Spring Fling Picnic was held on April 21, 2001 at the Tiffany Park in Bryan. A softball game was held between the Faculty/staff and the Students with Dr. Kruger officiating. After a hard fought battle, the students were triumphant. However, the members of the faculty & staff team said that they will be more than ready for a rematch next year.
