Welcome
from the
Interim Department Head Dr. John Carey |
Welcome to the Texas A&M University Poultry Science Department web site. We are a comprehensive poultry science program with academic, research, and service components spanning the full range from modern poultry management to the most cutting-edge biotechnology. Our new on-line education program offers full Masters degree curriculum or individual courses for either credit or continuing education certification. Please visit our on-line education page for more information
With an enrollment of 186 undergraduate students and 42 graduate students, we are the largest Poultry Science Department in the United States and probably the world. Despite our size relative to other poultry programs, we are still a small Department capable of providing a quality, personalized education with plenty of meaningful contact with the professors. Upon graduation, these students usually have leadership positions in the poultry industry and such allied fields as pharmaceuticals, equipment, exotic animals, and government regulation. Specific positions are in management, sales, technical service, quality assurance or research/development. Our undergraduates also commonly continue their education in graduate school or professional schools such as veterinary medicine, human medicine, and law. Many internships are available for students to gain real world experience in their future careers. We also have a variety of scholarships available on a competitive basis.
Graduate student programs are in a wide variety of fields in Poultry Science and beyond. Our faculty members represent all aspects of the poultry industry including genetics, diseases, embryology, nutrition, physiology, immunology, management, processing, marketing, food safety, microbiology and the environment. Because several of our Poultry Science faculty are also members of interdisciplinary programs such as Nutrition, Food Science, Genetics, Reproductive Biology, Toxicology, Virology, and Biotechnology, advanced degrees are available in our Department for all of these majors. We also have faculty in the Center for Animal Biotechnology and Genomics and the Institute of Food Science and Engineering. Likewise, our research programs represent basic and application-oriented research in all these areas. I specifically invite you to look at our Life Sciences page that also links to the Life Sciences Program at Texas A&M University. Poultry Science is actively engaged in life sciences research through the use of the bird as a model animal as well as its many unique biological systems. Poultry Science is a great way to put your basic biological, biochemical, genetic, and microbiological training to practical, marketable and beneficial use. Graduate funding in the form of assistantships, fellowships and scholarships are available in our Department on a competitive basis.
Our Extension programs are an interface with the public and function to disseminate information to the public and relevant industries. Youth development through activities such as 4H, FFA, and school science programs is an area of major focus. To complement their public outreach activities, the Extension Specialists on our faculty have active research programs and teach courses.
It is my sincere hope that you will find this site not only a location for all your poultry-related needs, but that it will also be your portal to the Texas A&M University System and its Life Sciences programs as well. I invite you to look through our web site and to learn more about us. We hope you choose us as your home for your college degree or just your source for information. Please do not hesitate to call or email us if your need further information or simply have a question. Gig 'em !!!
