		<description><![CDATA[TUCKER, GA– Texas A&#38;M University recently won the 66th U.S. Poultry &#38; Egg Association National Poultry Judging Contest, held at Louisiana State University. This is their sixth consecutive win, having won first place at the event every year since 2008. Additionally, Michael Clay, a junior at Texas A&#38;M, was announced high individual winner. The Kansas State University team placed a close second in the team competition, with William Trieb, sophomore, finishing second in the individual category. <p>TUCKER, GA– Texas A&amp;M University recently won the 66th U.S. Poultry &amp; Egg Association National Poultry Judging Contest, held at Louisiana State University. This is their sixth consecutive win, having won first place at the event every year since 2008. Additionally, Michael Clay, a junior at Texas A&amp;M, was announced high individual winner.</p>
<p>The Kansas State University team placed a close second in the team competition, with William Trieb, sophomore, finishing second in the individual category.</p>
<p>USPOULTRY and the USPOULTRY Foundation sponsors the National Poultry Judging Contest as part of its comprehensive student outreach program. The contest was established to enhance young people&#8217;s interest in the poultry industry and encourage student enrollment in poultry science studies. Teams compete in production judging, breed selection, and market products judging.</p>
<p>The Association also sponsors the annual College Student Career Program at the International Poultry Expo, supports National FFA and National 4-H poultry activities, and funds student recruiting efforts for poultry science departments and related programs through the USPOULTRY Foundation.</p>
<p>Eleven universities participated in this year&#8217;s competition. The awards were presented by Barbara Jenkins, vice president of education programs, U.S. Poultry &amp; Egg Association.</p>
<p>U.S. Poultry &amp; Egg Association is an all-feather organization representing the complete spectrum of today’s poultry industry, with a focus on progressively serving member companies through research, education, communication, and technical assistance. Founded in 1947, U.S. Poultry &amp; Egg Association is based in Tucker, GA.</p>

<p>TUCKER, GA – Texas A&amp;M University recently received a student recruiting grant from the USPOULTRY Foundation. Accepting the check in the amount of $24,910 was Dr. Jimmy Keeton, Interim Head of the Department of Poultry Science. The presentation was made by Brian Barrett, President, Feather Crest Farms and USPOULTRY board member.</p>
<p>“The generous support provided by the USPOULTRY Foundation enables the Department of Poultry Science to recruit and retain exceptional students through programs and activities that are student focused, promote all facets of the poultry industry, and provide learning opportunities over a broad spectrum of topics. It is our goal to prepare students in such a manner that they not only succeed, but also become leaders in this global industry,” Keeton remarked.</p>
<p>The USPOULTRY Foundation board recently approved student recruiting grants totaling more than $160,000 to the six U.S. universities with poultry science departments and 15 other institutions with industry related programs. The Foundation provides annual recruiting funds to colleges and universities to attract students to their poultry programs.</p>

<p>Dr. Creger was born June 8, 1934, to Marie Irene Smith and Clarence R. Creger, Sr. in Carona, Kansas. He served in the United States Army and the Army Reserves, retiring with the rank of Colonel. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in 1956 and his Masters of Science Degree in 1957 in nutrition from Kansas State University. In 1960, Clarence received his Doctoral Degree in biochemistry and nutrition from Texas A&amp;M University.</p>
<p>Dr. Creger&#8217;s career started as research assistant at Kansas State before taking the same position at Texas A&amp;M in 1958, to work on his Doctoral Degree. He worked his way from Assistant Professor beginning in 1962 to Professor and Head of the Department of Poultry at A&amp;M from 1982 to 1992. In 1992 he became Interim Associate Deputy Chancellor for Agriculture and Interim Executive Associate Dean, and professor in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. On September 1, 2004 to December 31, 2004 he became Deputy Chancellor for Agriculture and Life Sciences, Associate Dean, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, and Professor, Department of Poultry Science. On January 1, 2005 until the present he was Professor, Department of Poultry Science. In 1992 he received the Deputy Chancellors Award for Excellence in Administration; in 1995 he received the Texas Poultry Federation Golden Feather Award in recognition of his service to the Texas Poultry Industry. In 1997, he received the Poultry Science Association Fellows Award.</p>
<p>During his career, he served as Graduate Advisor for Poultry Science and Nutrition students, and Counselor for undergraduate students. He has authored and co-authored over 190 scientific articles in the field of poultry nutrition and biochemistry, authored a book on poultry nutrition and biochemistry, titled &#8220;Poultry Nutrition, A Programmed Text&#8221;. He co-authored another book on vitamins and minerals.</p>
<p>He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Margie Creger Grant, Willa Creger Burdette, and Ruth Marie Creger; and one nephew, Ralph Burdette, Jr.</p>
<p>He is survived by his niece, Judy Reynolds of Scammon, Kansas; two great-nieces, Cyndee Martin and Wyndee Arneson both of Scammon, Kansas; two great-nephews, Bryan Burdette of Pittsburg, Kansas and Broc Burdette of Scammon, Kansas; four great-great-nieces; six great-great-nephews; and one great-great-great-niece.</p>
<p>He had a lifelong love and respect for nature and will be remembered for his kindness and brilliant mind.</p>

After graduation, he worked for Tyson Foods as a processing plant supervisor in Broken Bow, Oklahoma. Farnell received an MS in poultry science and PhD in veterinary microbiology from Texas A&amp;M University. He completed postdoctoral fellowships with the Institute for Animal Health (Compton, England) and the USDA-Agricultural Research Service (Fayetteville, Arkansas). Farnell’s range of poultry research includes avian immunology, preharvest food safety, gut health (prebiotics, probiotics, drugs, and vaccines), alternative feedstuffs, emergency depopulation, and cleaning and disinfection of poultry facilities. He teaches 2 poultry meat production classes that cover all aspects of poultry production, from the primary breeder to the consumer’s dining room table. He serves as an advisor to the Texas Poultry Federation and the Texas Veterinary Medical Association’s Animal Welfare Task Force. In addition to giving numerous presentations, he has actively participated in many PSA meetings as a moderator, presentation judge, student mentor, and workshop planner. Farnell was the recipient of the Poultry Science Association’s Early Achievement Award in Poultry Extension Work in 2009 and has served as a member of the PSA 2010 Strategic Planning Initiative.  Congratulations!</p>

Dale Hyatt has been a staff member in the Department of Poultry Science at Texas A&amp;M since September of 1985. Dale grew up in Dickinson, Texas, a small town located midway between Houston and Galveston. He received his BS in poultry science from Texas A&amp;M University in 1979. Immediately following graduation, he was hired to serve as division manager for Earl B. Olsen Farms, a division of Jennie-O Foods, located in central Minnesota. He left Earl B. Olsen Farms in the summer of 1983 and returned to Texas A&amp;M, Poultry Science Department, to enroll as an MS student. The Poultry Science Department completed construction of a new poultry research farm in 1985 and created a position available as farm manager. Dale was offered and accepted the position and left graduate school as a PhD candidate to meet the challenge of managing and operating a new facility. Throughout his career, Dale has become involved with several Poultry Youth projects and currently serves as committee member for the FFA National Poultry Committee, chairman for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, Poultry Show, and participates in numerous Poultry Youth events on a state and national level. In addition to serving as poultry farm manager, Dale has conducted numerous research trials in the field of poultry health and management. He also manages and mentors several part-time, undergraduate, student farm employees and assists with instruction of several undergraduate poultry science classes and laboratories.  Congratulations!</p>
