Hens bred for egg production are able to efficiently convert feed to eggs. Unfortunately, male chicks that hatch from egg producing lines have no economic value and must be humanely euthanized at the hatchery. Dr. Morgan Farnell was recently awarded a $75,000 grant from the USPOULTRY Foundation to identify potential solutions to this challenging aspect of commercial egg production. The two year project is entitled “Euthanasia of Recently Hatched Neonates”. The objectives of the study are to evaluate currently accepted means of chick euthanasia and to potentially develop improved methods of humane euthanasia considering animal well-being and the needs of the poultry industry.
