Department of Poultry Science Honors Program

The Poultry Science Honors Program is designed for highly motivated students who are majoring in Poultry Science.  All completed Honors course work taken at Texas A&M University is designated as such on the student’s official transcript, showing that the student has taken part in this enhanced curriculum.

Entrance Requirements:
To enroll in the POSC Honors Program, students must meet TAMU Honors eligibility requirements (see

Requirements for Honors in Poultry Science:
In order to receive Honors in Poultry Science, a POSC major must complete all of the requirements for a POSC major of which 18 hours must be completed as follows:
1. At least 9 hours of honors courses other than in Poultry Science (3 hrs.of which are required for the POSC major).
2. At least 3 hours in a POSC 200 level or above honors course
3. At least 3 hours in a POSC 300 level or above honors course
4. At least 3 hours in a POSC 400 level or above honors course
A maximum of 6 honors credits by AP or transfer may be used in meeting these requirements

Grade requirements:
1. A cumulative GPA equal to or above 3.5.
2. A GPA equal to or greater than 3.25 and no grade lower than a B in the 18 hours of required honors courses.
3. No F on the transcript.

Poultry Science Honors Course Descriptions:
POSC 201 – Introduction to Poultry Science
In addition to the online quizzes and monthly exams, students enrolled in the honors section of POSC 201 will be responsible for preparing a 10 to 12 page paper discussing current issue in the poultry industry, for example, new welfare requirements, management practices, or food safety regulations. Students will also present a 10 minute in class presentation discussing the current issue they selected and provide information on how the poultry industry plans to move forward to address the situation.

POSC 308 – Avian Anatomy and Physiology
In addition to receiving all course materials, examinations, practical examinations, and quizzes currently administered in the course, students enrolled in the honors section of POSC 308-Avian Anatomy and Physiology will also undertake a semester project which will focus upon advanced anatomical or physiological concepts. Possible projects will include the complete construction of an avian skeleton or the development of an avian histology slide set.  The skeleton construction project will involve the student building a complete avian skeleton from either a domestic chicken or turkey. This project with be documented in great detail in the form of a written report that will be submitted to the instructor of record at the end of the semester along with the skeleton. Similarly, an avian histology slide set of 20 distinct organs or tissues from the chicken can be developed by the student.  Again, a written report documenting the entire process will be submitted along with the slide set at the end of the semester to the instructor of record for the course.

POSC406 – Poultry Processing and Products
A general course in egg functionality, poultry slaughter, meat quality, and value added poultry products. The science and practice of processing and products of poultry and eggs; physical, chemical, microbiological, and functional characteristics of value- added poultry products as they affect consumer acceptance, efficiency of production, and regulatory approval.
Honors students taking this class will be exposed to in-class lectures as well as weekly hand –on activities. In addition, the honors students will be receiving extra assignments involving direct contact with industry in problem solving current issues.  The extra assignments will be structured so that the honors students will be given a current industry problem and they will have to discuss with industry contacts as well as research the problem area.  The students will then be asked to discuss the problem and solution(s) in class during a 15 minute presentation
to the class.  An assignment will be given for each major topic area in the class: eggs, processing, further processing, and possibly even food safety.

POSC 411 -Poultry Nutrition
Students enrolled in the POSC 411 honors section will be expected to participate in weekly lab meetings with a research group in addition to regularly scheduled class time. The basic idea of the Poultry Nutrition Honors Section is to provide a one on one laboratory experience to the students regarding current research in the field of Poultry Nutrition. The honor’s student will work directly with my laboratory personnel as an equal partner to gain this experience.
The basic concept involves designing a relatively small experiment (3-wk broiler grow out) in which the student will determine the minimum nutrient requirement. For example we may set up an experiment to evaluate the protein, calcium, phosphorus or salt requirement for starting broiler chickens using an indigestible marker such as titanium dioxide. This student will be involved in all aspects to the design, diet preparation, feed mixing, animal husbandry, data collection and analysis. In addition to routine data collection with regard to animal performance (feed consumption, weight gain, mortality) feed and fecal samples will be collected and analyzed in the laboratory. Thus the single 3-wk grow out trial will provide enough materials to provide a semester long laboratory experience. The honor’s student will be given 15 minutes to present the results of his research experience to classmates toward the end of the semester.

POSC 427 –  Animal Waste Management
Waste management in animal agriculture involves many situations where science, policy and management of production systems is intertwined. An honors program will be developed to challenge students to assess the environmental, sociological, economic, and management impacts of a problem related to animal waste management. Students in an honors section will be required to address this problem through a series of assignments. The problem or case study will be assigned by the instructor.
