Scholarship Information

The scholarships administered by the Department of Poultry Science range from $500 per year to $6,000 per year. All recipients of scholarships administered by the Department of Poultry Science must be majoring in Poultry Science and maintain at least a 2.5-grade point ratio.

Delvin & Marye Barrett Endowed Scholarship

Endowed by Mr. and Mrs. Barrett. Mr. Delvin Barrett, (‘50) spent his life building Feather Crest Farms, Inc., serving Texas A&M University and the agricultural industries of Texas and the nation, ensuring the future of agricultural higher education.

W.O. “Bill” Cawley Memorial Scholarship

Dr. Cawley was a long-time faculty member of the Poultry Science Department. He provided leadership for the 4-H and youth poultry programs and had a special interest in fancy poultry breeds. This scholarship was established by the Texas Associated of Exhibition Poultry Clubs in recognition of Dr. Cawley’s contributions to their organization.

Herb Chafin Endowed Scholarship

Established by Herb Chafin in recognition of departmental contributions to the Houston and San Antonio turkey shows. Chafin Industries furnished the turkeys for these shows for several years and in turn contributed to youth pursuing careers in the industry.

Shirley Denton Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded in collaboration with the Poultry Science Association. This scholarship was established in memory of Mrs. Shirley Denton by Dr. James Denton and the Poultry Science Foundation. Dr. Denton served as Associate Department Head of Extension and Acting Department Head here at Texas A&M Poultry Science, before he moved to Arkansas. He served as the Center Director and Department Head of the Center of Excellence for Poultry Science at the University of Arkansas. His wife Shirley embraced her role as a Poultry Science faculty wife and relished her interactions with the students.

 Leo and Edna Fuchs Endowed Scholarship

Established by the Monroe Fuchs family. Mr. and Mrs. Leo Fuchs were the founders of Ideal Hatchery in Cameron, TX. Monroe Fuchs (‘56) and their family continue to operate Ideal Poultry Breeding Farms.

Monroe H. Fuchs ’56 Endowed Scholarship

Endowed by the family of Monroe Fuchs ‘56, who still operate the Ideal Poultry Breeding Farms in Cameron, Texas. Monroe is still very active in improving and creating new lines of birds through his extensive knowledge of genetics and breeding.

Susan W. ’85 and Gary M. Fuchs ’78 Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was endowed by the family of Monroe Fuchs in the Fall of 2011. Gary (’78) and Susan Fuchs (’85) assist in running the day-to-day operations of Ideal Poultry Breeding Farms in Cameron, Texas. Gary serves as president of Ideal Poultry which is the nation’s largest supplier of backyard poultry.

D.A. & Janet Fuchs Crouch ‘83 Endowed Scholarship

This award was endowed by the family of Monroe Fuchs in 2017. Janet Fuchs Crouch (’83) serves as Vice President of Ideal Poultry Breeding Farms in Cameron, Texas, and is involved in the day-to-day operations of the family business.

Dr. Fred Gardner Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is endowed through the Poultry Science Association in memory of Dr. Fred Gardner, Class of 1955. Dr. Gardner received his Bachelors and Masters from Texas A&M Poultry Science and served as a faculty and researcher for his entire career. Dr. Gardner served as a leader in academia and the industry related to food safety.

Janet Lynn Greer Memorial Scholarship

Endowed by Mrs. Carolyn Wallace in honor of her daughter Janet Greer, class of 1990. Janet was a graduate student in the department under the mentorship of Dr. Pamela Hargis pursuing a Ph.D. in Poultry Nutrition.

 James & Walline Grimm Endowed Scholarship

This award was established through donations from family, friends, and members of the poultry industry as a thank you to Mr. & Mrs. Grimm for their years of service to the Texas Poultry Federation. James served as the Executive Vice President of the Texas Poultry Federation for many years. He and Walline have supported our department in a variety of ways, including fundraising for scholarships, guiding interns at Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo AgVentures Poultry Exhibit, and interacting with students at poultry industry events across the state.

Pamela S. Hargis Memorial Scholarship

Established in memory of Dr. Pamela Hargis by Dr. Billy Hargis and contributions from friends and colleagues. Dr. Pamela Hargis was a faculty member in poultry nutrition and interim department head.

Hubbard Farms Endowed Scholarship

Since 1921, Hubbard has been a worldwide reference for broiler breeder stock. The Hubbard Farms Scholarship is awarded by the Hubbard Charitable Foundation to one student majoring in Poultry Science.

R. E. Janes Memorial Scholarship

R.E. Janes owned and operated Janes Bar-Nothing Turkey Ranch near Austin, Texas. His family established this scholarship in his memory to be awarded to a student majoring in Poultry Science.

F. W. Kazmeier Endowed Scholarship

Endowed by the family of F. W. Kazmeier. In 1912, Mr. Kazmeier became the first poultry instructor at Texas A&M College. He was also head of the Poultry Extension Department for 8 years. After his retirement from Texas A&M, Mr. Kazmeier was the owner and operator of Kazmeier Hatchery in Bryan, TX, and numerous poultry farms in the Brazos Valley.

 W. F. and Ruth Krueger Endowed Scholarship

W. F. Krueger (‘43) joined Texas A&M as a faculty member in 1953 and served as department head from 1972 and 1982. His many research accomplishments have had profound impacts on the discipline and industry. Dr. Krueger was the legendary poultry coach for decades and impacted many young people through Texas A&M’s judging program. Both Dr. and Mrs. Krueger also touched the lives of countless students throughout their many years of teaching. They generously created this scholarship to continue their legacy into the future.

Allen & Carissa Laughlin ’08 Scholarship

Allen and Carissa Laughlin both graduated with degrees in Poultry Science in 2008. They currently work for Sanderson Farms in Bryan, TX. Allen serves as the Division Manager of Brazos Processing and Carissa is the Quality Control Manager. As former scholarship recipients, they know firsthand the difference these scholarships make for students.

Bob and Margaret Palm COADC Endowed Scholarship

Established by Bob Palm (‘65) and Margaret Palm. Bob Palm is vice president of Pilgrim’s Pride and oversees the Lufkin and Nacogdoches Pilgrim’s operations. He is also a former chairman of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Development Council (COADC).

Ray & Gail Pieniazek Scholarship

Mr. Ray Pieniazek has dedicated his career to agriculture education through his former position as an Agriculture Science Teacher in Houston and East Central High School. Ray currently serves as the Executive Director of the Agriculture Teacher’s Association of Texas. He, along with his wife Gail, have dedicated their lives to helping students succeed in and outside the classroom. They have mentored and coached many young people across the state. This award will be going to a member of the Poultry Judging team in Mr. Pieniazek’s honor.

Samantha Pohl ’08 Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was established by family, friends’ colleagues, and very generous contributions from Poultry Heath and Allied Industry companies including Merck, Animal Health, Cobb, Ceva, and Aviagen. Samantha was a former student of the Poultry Science Department earning her Bachelors in 2008, Masters in 2010, and DVM in 2014. After completing of her DVM, she went on to the Master of Avian Medicine program at the University of Georgia where she graduated in 2016. The student selected for this scholarship has the intention of following Samantha’s legacy in pursuing Avian Medicine.

Ray Price Memorial Scholarship

Endowed by Ray Price to be awarded to undergraduate students in poultry science. Mr. Price was a long-time Texas poultry breeder.

Henry and Jean Prochazka Scholarship

Endowed by Henry (‘53) and Jean Prochazka. Henry Prochazka was in the Texas laying hen industry for many years. This scholarship was endowed by Henry (’53) and Jean Prochazka. Henry was in the Texas laying hen industry for many decades. He and his wife have always been tremendous supporters of the Poultry Science Department.

Grady Scroggins Memorial Scholarship
Mr. Scroggins (‘50) was the Farm Manager for the Janes Bar-Nothing Turkey Ranch near Austin, Texas. He continued to work for Plantation Food when they bought Mr. Janes’ turkey operation.

Drs. Fred and Nancy Thornberry Scholarship

Endowed by the daughters of Drs. Fred and Nancy Thornberry in recognition for Fred’s nearly 50 years of dedicated service as a faculty member and Extension specialist in the Poultry Extension Unit. He specialized is the raising and selection of market poultry for the local, county, and major poultry shows all over the state.

Texas Allied Poultry Association (TAPA) Scholarships

These funds are collected annually at a live and silent scholarship auction that is part of the annual Texas Poultry Federation Convention. Scholarship recipients are selected by an internal TPF committee. Students selected to receive TAPA scholarships are undergraduate Poultry Science majors at either Texas A&M University or Stephen F. Austin State University.

Texas Broiler Council Endowed Graduate Fellowship

The Texas Broiler Council has endowed scholarships in appreciation for departmental assistance with the Houston Livestock Show and San Antonio poultry show programs.

JoAnn & Dr. CH Whiteside Endowed Scholarship

The JoAnn and Dr. CH Whiteside (’53) Scholarship was endowed in 2019. Dr. Whiteside completed his Bachelors in Animal Husbandry, his Masters in Poultry Science, and his Ph.D. in Biochemistry. Dr. Whiteside and his wife JoAnn founded and operated Ana-Lab in Kilgore, Texas where they are a nationally recognized environmental testing laboratory. The Whitesides know the importance of investing in young people, and they enjoy mentoring local youth in East Texas.

INCOMING FRESHMEN SCHOLARSHIPS

Cecil B. Ryan Endowed Scholarship
Endowed by family and friends upon Dr. Ryan’s retirement from the department as a professor and judging team coach. Awarded to freshmen entering the Department of Poultry Science based on high school accomplishments and grades.

C. R. Creger Endowed Scholarship in Poultry Science
Dr. Creger joined the departmental faculty in 1962 and later served as Department Head, Executive Associate Dean, and Associate Vice-Chancellor of the Texas A&M University System.
