The Texas A&M University Poultry Judging Team traveled to Baton Rouge, LA to compete in the 2015 US Poultry and Egg National Collegiate Poultry Judging Contest on April 16th and 17th. Nine teams from across the nation competed in the two day competition which was hosted by the Louisiana State University. The contest concluded with Texas A&M winning the overall team competition. Tucker Allcorn and Hunter Walters received Student Research Paper Certificates of Excellence for presenting high-quality research papers at the 2015 International Production and Processing Exposition Annual Meeting held in Atlanta, Georgia on January 26th -29th, 2015. Both presentations were submitted in the Nutrition and Metabolism section and involved the use of various enzymes on broiler performance. The National Center for Electron Beam Research was formally designated as an IAEA Collaborating Center for Electron Beam technologies for food, health and environment. The event was marked by a plaque dedication ceremony that involved H.E. Ambassador Yukia Amano, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) handing over the plaque to Dr. Suresh Pillai, Director of the eBeam Center. Dr. Suresh Pillai was awarded a grant of $242,902 from the Texas A&M AgriLife Water Seed Grant Program for the research project “Significant Expansion of Water Reuse using Electron Beam (eBeam) Technology. Co-PIs for this grant include Bill Batchelor (Civil Engineering) and Yongheng Huang (Biological and Agricultural Engineering). Electron beam (eBeam) technology is the most inexpensive approach of rapidly generating high concentrations of free radicals. HLSR Show broiler chicks will be distributed Tuesday, January 28th as originally planned. In the event that adverse weather creates a road icing problem and pick up for some counties is delayed, we will hold the chicks in a climate controlled environment ,overnight for pick up on the following day, ( Wednesday, Jan 29th). This extra day, if necessary, will have no detrimental effects on chick livability and performance provided they are transported properly.
