Dr. Suresh Pillai, Professor of Microbiology in the Department of Poultry Science, and former Research Associate in Dr. Pillai’s laboratory, Jessica McKelvey, recently published the text entitled “Molecular Methods for the Detection and Characterization of Foodborne and Environmental Pathogens” through DEStech Publications, Inc. Shima Shayanfar, PhD Student under the guidance of Dr. Suresh Pillai, won the Best Student Poster Award at the 2016 International Meeting of Radiation Processing in Vancouver, BC, Canada Nov 7-11th. Her poster titled, “Opportunities and challenges of employing electron beam technology for fresh produce” was chosen based on novelty, significance, presentation, layout, scientific committee scoring, and consensus review. As part of this selection, she was invited to make a brief keynote talk at the plenary session.
Hens bred for egg production are able to efficiently convert feed to eggs. Unfortunately, male chicks that hatch from egg producing lines have no economic value and must be humanely euthanized at the hatchery. Dr. Morgan Farnell was recently awarded a $75,000 grant from the USPOULTRY Foundation to identify potential solutions to this challenging aspect of commercial egg production. Over the course of the summer, the Department of Poultry Science was honored to welcome Drs. Yuhua and Morgan Farnell back to Texas A&M University to join our departmental faculty. Dr. Yuhua Farnell: Dr. Yuhua Farnell joined the POSC faculty on August 1, 2016 as an Instructional Assistant Professor. Dr. Suresh Pillai has been selected to serve on the Advisory Council on Food System Innovation. This is a scientific advisory council that will provide advice and recommendations on policy and program development, program implementation, evaluation and other matters of significance to the mission and goals of the Foundation for Food and Agriculture Research (FFAR). Dr. Giridhar Athrey, Assistant Professor in the Department of Poultry Science, has been awarded a grant from the Robert J. and Helen C. Kleberg Foundation. The proposal entitled, “Flaviviral integration into the vector genome as a driver of Zika virus transmission” received $211,372 in funding for the two year project. The USPOULTRY Harold E. Ford Foundation and Tyson Foods have awarded a grant in the amount of $34,766 to the TAMU Poultry Science Department. This grant will support the Poultry Science department efforts to continue to recruit, retain, and graduate the best and brightest students for long-term contributions to the commercial and allied industries.
