The Jones-Hamilton Company has established a fund in the Poultry Science Department in Dr. Carey’s name to support research and other faculty endeavors overseen by him. The Dr. John Carey Excellence Fund represents a $50,000 donation to the Department in Dr. Carey’s name. Congratulations to Dr. Carey on this very prestigious honor!
The Texas A&M University Poultry Judging Team traveled to Fayetteville, AR to compete in the 2014 National Collegiate Poultry Judging Contest on November 3th and 4thth. Seven teams from across the nation competed in the two day competition which was hosted by the University of Arkansas. The contest concluded with Texas A&M winning its ninth National Collegiate Poultry Judging Contest in a row dating back to November 2006. The National Center for Electron Beam Research was formally designated as an IAEA Collaborating Center for Electron Beam technologies for food, health and environment. The event was marked by a plaque dedication ceremony that involved H.E. Ambassador Yukia Amano, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) handing over the plaque to Dr. Suresh Pillai, Director of the eBeam Center. Ruth Kuretsch Krueger, 88, of Bryan, passed away at her home on Monday, August 11, 2014. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday at Memorial Funeral Chapel, 1515 South College Avenue, in Bryan. A celebration of Ruth’s life will be held at Faith United Church, 2901 Austin’s Colony Parkway, Bryan, Texas at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, August 16, 2014. Dr. Christine Alvarado, Associate Professor, was the recipient of the 2014 Poultry Science Association – Novus International Teaching Award. This annual award, consisting of $2,000 and an engraved plaque, is given to a member of PSA who, over a period of years, has demonstrated outstanding success as a teacher. Dr. Christine Alvarado, Dale Hyatt and Mickey Speakmon Teach the Poultry Session of the 2014 Barbeque Summer Camp
Dr. Christine Alvarado along with Dale Hyatt and Mickey Speakmon taught attendees of the 2014 Barbeque Summer Camp all about the poultry industry and how to make BBQ chicken. They also made jalapeno cheese sausage, beer can chicken, mayonnaise rubbed drums, breast and dark meat fajitas, and orange marmalade Siracha wings. The 2014 Market Poultry Production and Selection Workshop was a huge success this year. This year’s event was by the far biggest to date and offered information to first timers as well as the experienced participants. It was held on May 31st at the Louis Pierce Pavilion on the campus of Texas A&M in College Station from 9am-3pm. Monroe H. Fuchs, ’56 has been recognized with the 2014 Distinguished Alumni Award, the highest honor bestowed upon a former student of Texas A&M University.
