Dr. Suresh Pillai has been selected as the 2011 Fellow of the International Forum on Industrial Bioprocesses (IFIBiop). This award was presented to Dr. Pillai on October 7 at the 5th IFIBiop Conference held in Taipei, Taiwan. Dr. Pillai was selected for this award based on his work with food irradiation and the use of advanced technologies to clean, heal and feed the world and beyond. Congratulations!

Dr. Clarence Richard Creger, Jr., 78, of College Station, Texas, passed away Saturday August 4, 2012, at St. Joseph Regional Health Care Center in Bryan. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, August 7, at Memorial Funeral Chapel in College Station. Graveside Services will be held Friday at Hosey Hill Cemetery in Weir, Kansas. Dr. Morgan Farnell was presented with the Phibro Extension Award at the 2012 Poultry Science Association Annual Meeting in Athens, Georgia. This award is given to a member for conduction an outstanding program of work in the area of poultry extension and outreach during a five-year period. Morgan Farnell is an associate professor and extension poultry specialist with the Texas AgriLife Extension Service, an agency of the Texas A&M University system. Dale Hyatt, Farm Manager of the TAMU Poultry Science Teaching, Research and Extension Facility, was presented with the Tyson Foods Support Personnel Award at the 2012 Poultry Science Association Annual Meeting in Athens, Georgia. This award acknowledges the long-term (5+ years) contributions by support personnel and recognizes outstanding support of research, extension, or teaching programs in poultry science. Tyler Askelson and Jake Pieniazek received Student Research Paper Certificates of Excellence for presenting high-quality research papers at the 2102 PSA Annual Meeting held in Athens, Georgia. The UPTO has issued the US Patent 8,173,139 B1 for “High energy Electron Beam Irradiation for the Production of Immunomodulators in Poultry” on May 8, 2012. This patent was based on work performed at the National Center for Electron Beam Research at Texas A&M University. The patent is on the idea of using E-Beam irradiation to develop vaccines against S.Typhimurium and S. Enteriditis. Poultry Judging Team Wins 2012 US Poultry and Egg Association National Collegiate Poultry Judging Contest
The Texas A&M University Poultry Judging Team traveled to Baton Rouge, LA from April 1st to 4th to compete in the US Poultry and Egg Association National Collegiate Poultry Judging Contest hosted by Louisiana State University. Ten teams from across the nation competed in the two day competition. The contest concluded with Texas A&M winning its twelfth national championship in the last thirteen competitions dating back to April 2006. Aska Hokazono, a graduate student in Dr. Rosemary Walzem’s laboratory, won second place in the Intercollegiate Faculty of Nutrition Student Research Poster competition. Ms. Hokazono will take home $200 for her poster entitled “Effect of Nutrition on In Vitro Biofilm Formation by Gastrointestinal-Associated Microbes” Congratulations!
